Gracias, extranjero amable

Last night I went for it and tried out my Spanish on this clerk at a Dunkin Donuts in Wilmette. He’s pretty funny and nutty, so I had previously thought about trying it out on him before but always lost my nerve. Last night I just dove in, and he was pretty patient. He corrected me and chatted a little and deemed my Spanish “not bad for an American” which might be the very definition of damning with faint praise. His advice to me was to “practice speaking Spanish with everyone I see on the street that looks Hispanic.” According to him, “es facil.”

Next time I go back I need to thank this dude and learn his name. He gave me a big confidence boost on this effort.
