The Downsides of Google Juice

Now I understand a little about why I was getting those weird drive-by insults on the original New Orleans post – that post is the #2 hit on Google for “new orleans jokes.” I’m getting hundreds of hits a day from Google for that search string. Thus, the people tasteless enough to be looking for big fun in a tragedy that is still happening are the ones that were showing up there. I’m sure most were quietly disappointed but a select few had to be real dicks about it.

I’ve added a rule in my config file. Anyone that comes here with that query string in the referer will get redirected to the Red Cross site. I don’t want that traffic and will be happy to send it elsewhere – perhaps to somewhere where it can do some good. The whole thing makes me feel kind of ill.

      Dave:

I join in expression of kudos.

I’ll also point out that you’re #1 in Google searches for “time wasting ass clown”, and #2 for “Grumpy Dickhead”. :) Mike got #1 in the latter. The same results obtain on Yahoo! search; and thanks to the wonderful twingine.com, I could search both engines for a phrase simultaneously. These are the important things.

Wow, that’s a great hack, Dave! You are one impressive dude. :-)

It wasn’t that big of a thing, technically. I just added these lines to the .htaccess file:

      RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} new.*orleans.*joke [NC,OR]
      RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} joke.*new.*orleans [NC]
      RewriteRule ^.* http://www.redcross.org/ [L,R]

It’s not perfect, but it seems to get most of them.

I know, Dave. I was referring to thinking up the solution, not the technical part of it. I mean that I wouldn’t have thought of it if you hadn’t mentioned it, even though I knew in the dark recesses of my mind that Apache can do this.
