Interesting conversation. I’ve had good results creating podcasts with everything from a two dollar cassette tape recorder (purchased at a garage sale) to a $600 studio setup. To be honest, however, there isn’t a huge difference between a $40 Logitech USB microphone headset and a much more expensive mic from Shure or Audio Technica or other pro audio source. The quality, however is all in the microphone.

It seesm like a waste of money to have bought the Marantz with that mic. You probably could have bought a used MD recorder for $30 and you would not notice a difference in audio quality. I’m sure you’ll get a better mic and we will hear every nuance of your voice .

TE and Steve, the mike I use for every podcast is one I got for $30 at Radio Shack almost a decade ago. I’ve thought about getting another, but now I’m kind of devoted to seeing exactly how much I can wring out of that money. It’s cardiod and does a surprisingly good job of isolating room noise. Just by controlling the placement geometry I can eliminate most of it.

Adam, I’m with you on that. I can’t see getting that, but like TE says if price is less important to you than form factor I can understand why it might be good for you. That much less to tote, etc. I personally kind of like that Marantz case form factor. I have used the cassette decks for mobile recording and interviewing, and I’m anxious to take the PMD670 out for a spin at Converge South and the Podcast Expo in California.

This thing is going to be so expensive, I think the point is if you can afford it, you can afford to replace it.

I’m using a Behringer B1, which is pretty good, nut so sensitive I’m now rebuilding my PC to be quieter. I also have to take the clock out of my office because the mic picks up the “tick….tock”.

Looks cool, but I would never buy it… I’d rather have my mic and recoder seperate in case something were to break all you’d have to do is replace one or the other. Besides, if you’re doing field interviews, consider an Electro-Voice 635A mic. Those fuckers can literally take a beating (I’ve seen one dropped from 20ft up in the air to a concrete floor and still work perfectly… Supposidely, you can also use them as hammers). I mean, they’re very ommnidirectional mics, and they’re not the best for doing live music, but they’re rock solid and I love them. Plus, they’ve been in production since the 60′s (I think) and are the work-horse of the news industry.

As for recording… I still like tape (with a good quailty deck), but MD and hard disk are good too!

It uses Sennheiser technology. That’s a German company which makes some of the best microphones. I have one I got 14 years ago for $450 and the same model now sells new for over $800.

When I first read this post I was skeptical but after reading the link, I want it! I hate all the cables I have to deal with when using my MD recorder. I have a little mic preamp too and that makes it even more messy.
