Change of Address

Whoa, I’ve been on this same cable modem system for almost two years, and today I got a different IP address. Previously, I’d had the same one for the entire life of this service. Freaky. If I weren’t spasticly taking a glance at AmigoFish server logs, I’d not have known it and then tomorrow if I tried to SSH into my home box from the Uplifter meeting I’d have been screwed. Time-Warner is just trying to screw with me and my populist media agenda!

Funny you should mention that. I am on comcast and my ip just changed last week for the first time in at least 1.5 years. Fortunately I have a dyndns.org account and it changed automatically, thanks to my linksys wrt54g. BTW do you have ssh running on box at home or the router. I used to run openssh on my home fileserver but now I’m running the dd-wrt firmware on my router which has sshd built-in. The nice thing is I don’t have to run proxy software on the box with the ssh server now and the router is a lot easier to setup and supports public/private keys too.

Sam, I had that on the Netgear that I used to use but don’t think my Linksys does. I don’t have that model but a cheaper one. I run ssh on the box not the router, but port forward to the box.

Funny that you mention it as well… I just got notified by Insight that due to system upgrades, any IP I have (even if I had a static IP) it would be changing.
