I like my situation at the company. I got laid off and got my severance package. Then was hired back a week later making three time as much for a few months. That money actually helped me get my house a few years later.

For better or worse, I've always been able to sneak out of a bad job prior to the first round of layoffs.

I've always found the best description of the current work culture summed up in a single line from the Princess Bride:

“Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning.” - Dread Pirate Roberts

The current instability of employment relationships was exactly why I made work for myself. It can't be any less stable than employment.

You played my favorite Decemberists song. Thank you.

I was listening to you talk in your usual thoughtful way about being layed off and you are definitely very sensitive about this topic. I think though that most people are not so thoughtful or sensitive to such things. I think that people long ago made the jump not to emotionally invest in their work if they work for someone else. This might be bad, but it's inevitable when there's no loyalty on the employer side. The one thing to take away from that silly "Who ate my cheese" book is to always be nimble and ready to go elsewhere. Does it numb a person's work passion? Maybe, or maybe it just makes a person focus on his or her work as opposed to on whom he or she works.

Good to have this Clam bake. Some heavy shit there today Brother Dave. Good stuff though on the whole work/soul arbitrage analogy. Very well stated. I haven't had a job for over 12 years-been doing my own business. I'm not wealthy or famous but I can look at my face in the mirror every day and feel good about myself. In the 12 years of doing this business got to spend a lot of it with my son around numerous hours each day. Uplift!
