Taking the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s of it’s pedestal. Hmm, agreed. I always felt the Beatles were over-rated anyhow. I’m one year ahead of Eddie(‘59), I agree with your observation that the best of lists are greatly skewed. I would opt for XTC Skylarking a Beatles influenced band over Sgt. Pepper’s any day of the week.
Man, I haven’t listened to Sgt Peppers since the 80’s! But you are right about the numbers – we are a huge number of people – and that has had a huge affect on the culture. I’ll do another audio reply or maybe reply on my podcast. Beyond music, the retirement of the boomers and the great cash-out of the market coupled with payments from pensions and Social Security and Medicare liability… well – I’m getting in shape and plan to stay healthy!
And in 1965, I remember – ‘Listen to the Rythm of the falling rain’ and ‘The Ballad of the Green Beret’ on the radio..
I’ve never been much of a fan of the Beatles later work and haven’t listened to Let It Be, Abbey Road or The White Album since the 80s. After listening to this episode I decided to dig out the cassettes and listen to them. I think I’ll stick to the early more rockabillyish stuff. Revolver and Rubber Soul are infinitely better than those other three albums.
