Derek, I didn't know the backstory. That's interesting, and explains why they are so heavily webcomic-centric.

Garrick, that's a wise move.

J, that's certainly sensible. The idea of using this to create retirement income and pull that in makes a lot of sense. You have to be able to really delay the gratification, knowing that what your working for today means you get to retire 2 years earlier in 20 years. That's my vision of retirement, though. It just means I get to work on things fulltime with zero revenue requirement.

Alberto, it's not that the VT shootings weren't a horrible tragedy, but they certainly need to be placed in perspective. The news you see on TV is the news that can be packaged, and what most lends itself to a dramatic graphic.

I checked the records and in 2005 16,900 people were murdered. The media coverage far excedes the weight of the story yet again. Our sense of reality is being warped by corporate greed and gossip.

On the money for the extra stuff vs the day job, I've been talking lately in terms of blogging/podcasting/writing, etc. for *retirement* instead of day job now, as well as for "fun" money.

$400 a month in cash from Adsense, affiliate accounts, and other ads is about the amount to max out an IRA. You could go up to that level without having to even deal a bit with taxes, just shove it into an IRA.

A new laptop every couple of years, a microphone when I want one and a few things like that on top and the creative work can be funding retirement coming sooner.

Of course, when you finally retire, you get just more time (free from constraints) to work even more on the creative stuff if you want.

I'm in software development too and know that I'd have to be a HELLOFA blogger/podcaster to make that kind of money just doing that.

As long as they're willing to pay me what they are for my 40 hour/week contribution, I get ALL of the rest of my time to work on whatever I want or nothing at all.

I agree 100% on avoiding the news in times of tragedy. I got the hint that something happened from my rss reader. Once I heard exactly what had happened. I self-imposed a 24hr news blackout.

The guy who made Project Wonderful is the same guy behind ComicSpace.com. I'm pretty sure he is a webcomic artist.

I also like the fact that the ad price is on the adspace itself. It's easier for me to see how well I'm doing.
