I'm putting on my choir robe here, the better for you to preach to me. I have a bunch of O'Reilly books on mine, purchased and downloaded direct, and copied to the Kindle. I have a book or two from Pragmatic Programmers that made their way to the Kindle in the same fashion. I have several PDF manuals from vendors that I copied on there as well. Rendering of arbitrary PDFs is still a crap shoot; some are fine, some are not. I've used the Kindle to leave blog comments, check websites, etc.

E-Ink rocks! With proper lighting, which you need anyway, the pages are sharp and clear. There's no eye strain with the Kindle; that definitely can't be said about LCD screens, or even dead tree pages.

I like your idea of putting personal lists of stuff on there; that usage hadn't occurred to me.

If this is a "closed system", close it some more!
